Monticello Railway Museum

Welcome aboard!

Welcome to the Monticello Railway Museum, an all-volunteer organization in central Illinois with an operational railroad main line yard open to the public. We offer train rides on Saturdays and Sundays from May through September, regardless of weather conditions, as well as a number of special events throughout the year.

We also collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit materials and artifacts from throughout the fascinating history of trains and railroading. Come explore our many rail cars and other equipment, and view our museum displays.

All regular trains and special events except for Throttle Time have been cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19. This includes Polar Express.

You will receive instruction from one of our volunteers and operate 31 with a small train over our museum trackage for an hour. Participants will also receive a certificate and a souvenir to take home.
